Stolen Truck or Van? Here's How to Keep Your Delivery Routes Running.

Insurance takes forever. Your route schedule doesn't. Let's fix this.

Written by Robert Jameson, Revenue-Based Finance Consultant

I got a call last Tuesday morning. It was from a client of ours in Chicago—runs a solid logistics company, about 15 vans in his fleet. I could hear the stress in his voice immediately.

Driver hopped out to drop a package on a porch. Maybe thirty seconds. Left the keys in the ignition (I know, I know, you tell them a thousand times not to do it, but they do it). Turned around, and the van was speeding down the block. Gone.

Here's the thing. That van was full of packages. That's a nightmare on its own. But the bigger problem for the business owner wasn't just the lost cargo. It was the fact that he was now down a vehicle on a contracted route that had to run the next morning.

We see this all the time at LoanQuail. Theft in the delivery space is out of control right now. If it's not the whole vehicle getting swiped, it's a crew sliding underneath with a Sawzall to steal the catalytic converter. I had another guy in Jersey lose three converters in one night. Boom. Three vans grounded.

The reality is, when you lose an asset like that, you have two problems. You have the police report problem, which is annoying. And you have the cash flow problem, which can actually kill your business.

The "Insurance Gap" is what kills you

Most people outside this industry think, "Oh, just file a claim. You have insurance, right?"

Yeah, sure. You have insurance. But have you dealt with a commercial auto claim lately? It is not fast. Honestly, it's painful. You're looking at 30 days minimum investigations. If the vehicle wasn't recovered, or if there's any dispute about how it was stolen (like the keys being left in it), that check might not show up for 60 to 90 days. Maybe longer.

But your driver needs to work tomorrow.

If you tell your driver, "Hey, take a few weeks off until State Farm cuts me a check," that driver is gone. They'll be driving for another DSP or FedEx contractor by the end of the day. Good drivers are harder to find than the trucks are right now.

So you're stuck renting a Penske or a fluid truck at a premium rate just to hold onto the route, bleeding cash every single day the insurance company drags their feet. It eats your margins alive.

How we actually fix this

This is where funding comes in. And I don't mean a bank loan. If you walk into a traditional bank and say, "My truck was stolen, I need a loan for a new one, but my collateral is gone," they're going to look at you like you're crazy. Plus, they'll want three years of tax returns and six weeks to make a decision.

You don't have six weeks. You barely have six hours.

At LoanQuail, we handle this differently. We look at your revenue. That's it. We know your delivery business has cash flow coming in. We know you have contracts. We know that if you get a replacement vehicle, that revenue continues. If you don't, the revenue stops.

So, we bridge the gap.

We can get you funding based on your business's overall health—usually within 24 hours. You take that capital, you go to the auction or the dealership, and you replace the unit immediately. You keep the driver employed. You keep the route active. You stop bleeding money on rentals.

Then, two months later when the insurance check finally arrives? You can use that to pay down the funding balance or just keep it as working capital for the next expansion. The point is, you didn't stop moving.

It's not just about total theft, either

I mentioned the catalytic converter thing earlier. That's a huge issue. Replacing those things isn't cheap, especially on fleet vehicles like the Ford Transits or Ram ProMasters. You're talking a couple thousand bucks a pop, plus the downtime for repairs.

If you get hit hard—say, someone hits your lot and does four trucks—that's a massive unexpected expense. Most small delivery fleets don't just have $10k or $15k sitting in a "repair fund" collecting dust. That money is usually deployed elsewhere, paying for fuel or payroll.

We had a merchant a few months back who needed $20,000 practically overnight to fix vandalism damage so he wouldn't breach his contract with the prime carrier. We got it done. He fixed the trucks, kept the contract, and paid us back out of the route earnings over the next few months.

It's just a tool to solve a problem.

What do you need to show us?

Look, I hate paperwork. You hate paperwork. We try to keep this as light as possible because we know you're probably dealing with police reports and insurance forms already.

To get funded for a replacement vehicle or repairs, we usually just need:

We are looking for a real business that had a bad day and needs to keep going. We don't need to see the police report. We don't need the insurance claim number. We just need to verify that your business makes money.

Should you buy used or new?

I get asked this a lot when guys get funded. "Should I put a down payment on a brand new 2024, or just buy a used beater to fill the gap?"

Honestly? It depends on your fleet strategy. Right now, the used market is still kinda weird. Prices are high. But availability on new units can be spotty depending on where you are in the country.

If you use our funding, you're technically getting working capital. That means we don't dictate what you buy. We aren't the lienholder on the truck title. We lend to the business, not the truck. So if you find a decent deal on Craigslist or a local auction for a 2018 model that runs well, buy it. If you want to use the funds to put a hefty down payment on a new lease so your monthly payments are lower, do that.

You're the boss. You know your fleet better than I do.

Don't let a thief shut you down

It makes me so angry when I see hardworking business owners almost go under because of some criminal. It's unfair. You built this route, you hired the drivers, you did the work. You shouldn't lose it all because someone decided to joyride your Sprinter van.

But the world isn't fair, and business definitely isn't. The only thing that matters is how fast you react.

If you're staring at an empty parking spot where your truck used to be, give us a shout. Check your eligibility on the site—it doesn't hurt your credit to look—and let's see what we can do. I'd rather send you money to solve the problem than hear about you losing your contract.

Let's get that truck replaced.
